Hackers onthullen bedrog en manipulatie bij CRU (‘Climatic Research Unit ‘)

Hackers hebben confidentiële documenten en e-mails geroofd van de CRU (‘Climatic Research Unit’) van de ‘the University of East Anglia’ (een van de belangrijkste leveranciers van temperatuurdata van het IPCC) en gepubliceerd op een anonieme FTP server.
Aanvankelijk werd gedacht dat het om een ‘hoax’ ging. Maar na gedetailleerde bestudering van de informatie leek dit toch weinig waarschijnlijk. De documenten bevatten informatie over de wijze waarop Hadley temperatuurgegevens manipuleert en klimaatsceptici buiten de deur houdt. Als zodanig is deze informatie uiteraard uiterst gevoelig en vernietigend voor de reputatie van de CRU.
De Essex County Conservative Examiner rapporteert daarover het volgende:
Some of the most embarrassing e-mails are attributed to Philip Jones, the Director of the CRU; Keith Briffa, his assistant; Michael E. Mann of the University of Virginia; Malcolm Hughes at the University of Arizona; and others. One such e-mail makes references to the famous “hockey-stick” graph published by Mann in the journal Nature:
I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (i.e. from 1981 onwards) and from 1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline. Mike’s series got the annual land and marine values while the other two got April-Sept for NH land N of 20N. The latter two are real for 1999, while the estimate for 1999 for NH combined is +0.44C wrt 61-90. The Global estimate for 1999 with data through Oct is +0.35C cf. 0.57 for 1998 …
Mr. Mosher offered this summary of the rest of the e-mails that he had found:
And, you get to see somebody with the name of Phil Jones say that he would rather destroy the CRU data than release it to McIntyre. And lots lots more, including how to obstruct or evade FOIA requests. and guess who funded the collection of cores at Yamal … and transferred money into a personal account in Russia [.] And you get to see what they really say behind the curtain. You get to see how they “shape” the news, how they struggled between telling the truth and making policy makers happy. [Y]ou get to see what they say about Idso and Pat Michaels, you get to read how they want to take us out into a dark alley, it’s stunning all very stunning. You get to watch somebody named Phil Jones say that John Daly’s [een brilliant klimaatscepticus van het eerste uur] death is good news … or words to that effect. I don’t know that it’s real… But the CRU code looks real.

Kunnen we geweeklaag en tandengeknars verwachten bij regeringen die de basis onder hun CO2 heffingen zien wegvallen?

Hackers gaan buiten de wet om en je kunt er geen lid van worden, net als bij de NSB. Bovendien zijn ze een one-issue partij, net als de NSB.

Kortom Phil Jones heeft bevestigd dat hackers materiaal hebben bemachtigd.

Ik weet niet hoe jullie ertegenaan kijken, maar volgens mij is het 100% waar. Geweldig nieuws toch! Kijken hoe lang het duurt voordat dit doordruppelt tot de Nederlandse pers. Tot die tijd even genieten van de Amerikaanse media.
Het volgende vond ik wel aardig; RealClimate schrijft zichzelf in een onmogelijke spagaat door te stellen dat de openbaring van deze e-mails als voordeel heeft dat iedereen nu te weten komt dat klimaatwetenschappers het toch niet altijd met elkaar eens zijn(huh?!).
“Instead, there is a peek into how scientists actually interact and the conflicts show that the community is a far cry from the monolith that is sometimes imagined. People working constructively to improve joint publications; scientists who are friendly and agree on many of the big picture issues, disagreeing at times about details and engaging in ‘robust’ discussions; Scientists expressing frustration at the misrepresentation of their work in politicized arenas and complaining when media reports get it wrong; Scientists resenting the time they have to take out of their research to deal with over-hyped nonsense.”
En wetenschappers die rapporteren presenteren die niet stroken met je visie, die mag je gerust uitmaken voor rotte vis. Dat is heel normaal in de wetenschappelijke wereld. Andere visies zijn namelijk broddel werk. Dat ziet en weet toch iedereen….
“Since emails are normally intended to be private, people writing them are, shall we say, somewhat freer in expressing themselves than they would in a public statement. For instance, we are sure it comes as no shock to know that many scientists do not hold Steve McIntyre in high regard. Nor that a large group of them thought that the Soon and Baliunas (2003), Douglass et al (2008) or McClean et al (2009) papers were not very good (to say the least) and should not have been published. These sentiments have been made abundantly clear in the literature (though possibly less bluntly).”
Overigens dat zij ook bevestigen dat de hack echt is, aangezien ook correspondentie van RealClimate met Hadley CRC tussen deze e-mails te vinden is.

De boorkernen van het Bre-X schandaal waren ook echte boringen waar de fraudeurs goud aan hadden toegevoegd. Er zullen best wel echte emails tussen zitten, maar het taalgebruik in de controversiele emails past absoluut niet bij wat ik verwacht in de CRU-communicatie.

Volgens RealClimate betreft het hier ook niet Hadley CRU maar de webmail server van University of East Anglia. Een apart instituut van Hadley CRU.
Hmmm, zwakt het toch iets af…. maar toch.

De NY Times besteedde gisteren ruim aandacht aan deze HATCRU affaire. Ik heb nog niets gezien in de Nederlandse pers.
Ik had vandaag een filmploeg van zes man uit de VS op bezoek, die pretenteert een genuanceerde film over klimaatverandering te produceren. Met bijdragen van gerenommeerde klimaatsceptische onderzoekers als Lindzen en Pielke. Tijdens een uur interview werd ook mij de vraag voorgelegd, wat denkt U van deze affaire? Is het niet de bom onder het klimaat alarmisme.?
Ik heb mij voorzichtig opgesteld. Mijns inziens toont het onderzoek van McIntyre reeds voldoende aan dat b.v. Mann en Biffra (met boomringonderzoek) data hebben gemanipuleerd. De gênante bekendmaking van hun onderlinge (vertrouwelijke) correspondentie kan als zodanig niet als bewijs dienen (bij een serieus onderzoek door een commissie die wetenschappelijk wangedrag probeert vast te stellen) dat er is gemanipuleerd met data. Maar de correspondentie geeft wel een beeld van de attitude van de verkondigers van het AGW alarmisme.
