Mullers 'bekering' van klimaatscepticus tot aanhanger menselijke broeikashypothese

Eerder (hier en hier) heb ik reeds over Richard Muller gerapporteerd, die in 'The New York Times' (NYT) schreef dat de uitkomsten van het BEST–project (BEST = 'Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature Project'), die overigens nog steeds niet voor publicatie zijn geaccepteerd, hem hadden 'bekeerd' van klimaatscepticus tot aanhanger van de menselijke broeikashypothese (AGW = Anthropogenic Global Warming).

Men zou verwachten dat deze bekering in het AGW–kamp en de daarmee sympathiserende media met vreugde zou zijn begroet. Immers, er zal in de hemel meer vreugde zijn over één zondaar die tot inkeer komt dan over negenennegentig rechtvaardigen die geen inkeer nodig hebben.

Maar ergens is er iets misgegaan. Bij nader onderzoek bleek dat Richard Muller eigenlijk nooit een klimaatscepticus was geweest. Hij had weliswaar Al Gore wegens overdrijving en – hockeystick – Michael Mann wegens 'sloppy science' bekritiseerd, maar was voor het overige toch een overtuigd AGW–er. Bovendien bleek dat zijn dochter die, naar hij schreef, een belangrijke rol bij het onderzoek had gespeeld, als consulente groene technologie aan de man probeerde te brengen. Dat is dan weer de spreekwoordelijke slager die zijn eigen vlees keurt.

Jo Nova schreef daarover:

Elizabeth Muller is listed as “Founder and Executive Director” of the Berkeley Earth Team along with her father Richard Muller. But since 2008 it appears she’s been earning money as a consultant telling governments how to implement green policies, how to reduce their carbon footprint and how to pick “the right technologies” – presumably meaning the right “Green” technologies.

Op haar blog meldde Jo Nova voorts dat het artikel van Richard Muller dat ook in twee toonaangevende Australische kranten, 'The Sydney Morning Herald' en 'The Age', was verschenen om onopgehelderde redenen van het net was gehaald. Zou het geloof van de Australische media in de klimaatalarmistische boodschap tanende zijn? Zou het briljante optreden van Christopher Monckton voor de Australische persclub dan toch een keerpunt zijn geweest?

Ook de ecofiele Andrew Revkin van dezelfde NYT waarin het artikel van Muller was verschenen, schreef kritisch over hem.

After the first round of papers went online last fall, some climate scientists, while put off by Muller’s past diatribes and self-promotional zeal, were mildly enthusiastic (see Gavin Schmidt here).

But others, notably the climate modeler William Connolley [een beruchte AGW-er die verantwoordelijk was voor veel desinformatie over klimaat op Wikipedia en daarvoor tijdelijk werd geschorst] through his Stoat blog, have dismissed Muller’s work — old and new — as “rubbish.”

It’s particularly notable that one collaborator on the first batch of papers, Judith Curry of the Georgia Institute of Technology, declined to be included as an author on the new one.

En zelfs – hockeystick – Michael Mann schreef een onaardige reactie op facebook over het werk van Muller:

“My view is that Muller’s efforts to promote himself by belittling the collective efforts of the entire atmospheric/climate research community over several decades, though, really does the scientific community a disservice. Its great that he’s reaffirmed what we already knew.

But for him to pretend that we couldn’t trust this entire scientific field until Richard Muller put his personal stamp of approval on their conclusions is, in my view, a very dangerously misguided philosophical take on how science works. It seems, in the end–quite sadly–that this is all really about Richard Muller’s self-aggrandizement.”

Onder de titel, 'Forgive me IPCC, for I have sinned...', schreef Rob Lyons op 'Spiked':

The rapturous welcome given to a high-profile ‘climate sceptic’ who has now recanted exposes the backwardness of green thinking.

‘Call me a converted skeptic. Three years ago I identified problems in previous climate studies that, in my mind, threw doubt on the very existence of global warming. Last year, following an intensive research effort involving a dozen scientists, I concluded that global warming was real and that the prior estimates of the rate of warming were correct. I’m now going a step further: humans are almost entirely the cause.’

So said Professor Richard A Muller in an op-ed for the New York Times on Sunday. Muller’s apparent Damascene conversion is the result of the Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature (BEST) project he founded with his daughter Elizabeth. In the NYT article, he claims that the BEST project shows ‘the average temperature of the Earth’s land has risen by two-and-a-half degrees Fahrenheit [about 1.5 degrees Celsius] over the past 250 years, including an increase of one-and-a-half degrees [about 0.8 degrees Celsius] over the most recent 50 years. Moreover, it appears likely that essentially all of this increase results from the human emission of greenhouse gases.’ ...

It sounds like a powerful argument: someone who has publicly taken a position for a few years, before putting up his hands and effectively saying: ‘You know what? I was wrong, and my fellow travellers were wrong, and we should just fall into line with the mainstream view.’ The conversion analogy is a good one. Here, instead of the unbeliever falling at the preacher’s feet and accepting Jesus into their lives, no longer able to resist the power of the Lord, we have the sceptic allowing the IPCC to drive out the devil of climate-change denial from within his soul.

Except, like many a modern faith healer’s performance, there’s something dodgy about this widespread interpretation.

Mag uit dit alles worden geconcludeerd dat de media – eindelijk – kritischer worden ten aanzien van de klimaathype? Tja, sommige media misschien. Maar in mijn perceptie is het toch niet meer dan millimeteren – maar dan gelukkig wèl in de goede richting. De grote omslag moet nog komen.
