Michael - hockeystick - Mann van blaam gezuiverd?

Eindelijk was het dan zo ver! Door de uitspraak van de 'National Science Foundation' (NSF) was Michael - hockeystick - Mann eindelijk van alle blaam gezuiverd en konden de aanhangers van de menselijke broeikashypothese (AGW = Anthropogenic Global Warming) opgelucht ademhalen, toch? Nou nee, niet helemaal.

De NSF heeft geen uitspraak gedaan of de hockeystick al dan niet juist was. Zij volstond met de volgende opmerkingen daarover:

– There are several concerns raised about the quality of the statistical analysis techniques that were used in the Subject's research. ...

– There was concern about how extensively the Subject's research had influenced the debate in the overall research field.

De NSF merkte ook nog op:

Much of the current debate focuses on the viability of the statistical procedures he [Mann] employed, the statistics used to confirm the accuracy of the results, and the degree to which one specific set of data impacts the statistical results. These concerns are all appropriate for scientific debate and to assist the research community in directing future research efforts to improve understanding in this field of research. Such scientific debate is ongoing but does not, in itself, constitute evidence of research misconduct.

Dat mag dan misschien wel waar zijn, maar het vervelende is dat Mann en andere hoofdrolspelers in het Climategate-schandaal, alsmede AGWers meer in het algemeen, er nog steeds alles aan doen om het klimaatdebat in de gerenommeerde tijdschriften en elders te frustreren, hetgeen een ernstige aantasting van de academische vrijheid impliceert.

Maar bovendien rijst de vraag hoe de NSF de manipulatie van de temperatuurdata na 1960 over het hoofd heeft kunnen zien. Iedereen die de laatste tijd ook maar een beetje het klimaatdebat heeft gevolgd, is bekend met 'Michael's Nature trick' en 'hide the decline', waar Mann c.s. in hun hockeystick de weergave van proxy data (die geen stijging maar een daling lieten zien) heeft afgebroken en daarvoor in de plaats thermometerdata (die wèl een stijging lieten zien) heeft opgenomen. Als dit geen 'research misconduct' is, wat is het dan wel?

Opvallend is ook dat de NSF in haar uitspraak twee maal verwijst naar haar Regulation 689 Research Misconduct. Bij lezing daarvan blijkt dat deze niet het hele spectrum aan wetenschappelijk wangedrag dekt – 'slechts' 'plagiarism', 'fabrication' en 'falsification'. Andere vormen van wetenschappelijk wangedrag, zoals de weigering data te delen met collega-wetenschappers, plannen om in strijd met de 'Freedom of Information Act' data te vernietigen, het stelselmatig zwartmaken van andersdenkende collega-wetenschappers bij redacties van wetenschappelijke bladen en het uitoefenen van druk op die redacties om hun artikelen niet te plaatsen, alsmede machinaties om AGW-kritische (hooofd)redacteuren te doen ontslaan, vallen daar dus kennelijk niet onder. En dat is allemaal gebeurd – en gebeurt nog steeds.

Kortom, de conclusie lijkt gerechtvaardigd dat de NSF zich formeel keurig aan de regels heeft gehouden, maar daarmee de buitenwacht weer een rad voor de ogen heeft gedraaid, zoals dat ook in vorige onderzoeken is gebeurd.

Mann heeft nog niet al zijn belagers van zich weten af te schudden. Er liep nog een verzoek om inzage in zijn e-mails van de zijde van het American Tradition Institute (ATI). Dit verzoek had al lang geleden kunnen zijn ingewilligd. Maar ondanks een gerechtelijk bevel daartoe, willen Mann en de Universiteit van Virginia, waaraan hij destijds was verbonden, niet volledig meewerken en blijven zij chicaneren. Dat wekt achterdocht. Zelfs een neutrale buitenstaander gaat dan al gauw denken dat Mann iets heeft te verbergen.

In een perscommuniqué merkt het ATI daar het volgende over op:

Dr. Michael Mann, lead author of the discredited “hockey stick” graph that was once hailed by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change as the “smoking gun” of the catastrophic man-made global warming theory, has asked to intervene in American Tradition Institute’s Freedom of Information Act lawsuit that seeks certain records produced by Mann and others while he was at the University of Virginia, for the purpose of keeping them hidden from the taxpayer. Specifically over the weekend ATI’s Environmental Law Center received service from two Pennsylvania attorneys who seek the court’s permission to argue for Dr. Mann to intervene in ATI’s case. The attorneys also filed a motion to stay production of documents still withheld by UVA, which are to be provided to ATI’s lawyers in roughly two weeks under a protective order that UVA voluntarily agreed to in May. Dr. Mann’s lawyers also desire a hearing in mid-September, in an effort to further delay UVA’s scheduled production of records under the order.

Dr. Mann’s argument, distilled, is that the court must bend the rules to allow him to block implementation of a transparency law, so as to shield his sensibilities from offense once the taxpayer – on whose dime he subsists – sees the methods he employed to advance the global warming theory and related policies. ATI’s Environmental Law Center is not sympathetic.

“Dr. Mann’s late-hour tactics offer the spectacle of someone who relies on the media’s repeats of his untrue claims of having been ‘investigated’ and ‘exonerated’ – that is, when he’s not sputtering ad hominem and conspiracy theories to change the subject,” said Christopher Horner, director of litigation for ATI’s Environmental Law Center. “Mann has tried whatever means possible to ensure he remains free of any serious scrutiny, and this just appears to be his last gasp.”

Het ATI vindt dat Mann en de zijnen in het geheel niet zijn vrijgepleit:

To the extent Dr. Mann, the university, or their obstructionist backers like Union of Concerned Scientists continue to argue he has been “cleared” or “exonerated,” or that any substantive investigation has taken place, those pleadings are undermined by their persistent efforts to squelch inquiry. As a result, all the public sees is an effort to sweep Climategate revelations under the rug in order to preserve the biggest taxpayer-financed gravy train for science and academia in decades. Hence we see the Rasmussen Reports poll last month that showed a strong majority of the public believes scientists who study climate change have falsified research data in order to support their own theories and beliefs.

Hoe het ook zij, het is een uiterst onverkwikkelijke zaak. Maar het is m.i. toch goed dat er eindelijk duidelijkheid komt. Naar mijn gevoel waren de onderzoeken die tot dusver hebben plaatsgevonden er niet op gericht om de onderste steen boven te krijgen en hadden zij een te hoog WC-eend gehalte. Vermoed wordt dat er nog 6.000 e-mails zijn, die nog niemand heeft gezien.
