Rich Lowry heeft een mooie column geschreven voor de National Review, waarin hij uitlegt dat Mitt Romney gewoon zichzelf moet durven zijn. Ja, hij is rijk. Ja, hij is een beetje afstandelijk. Ja, hij maakt graag grappen over zichzelf. Nee, hij is niet hip.
Maar toch. Hij kan wel degelijk winnen; als hij maar ophoudt met een ander proberen te zijn. Wees authentiek, ook als een deel van de kiezers je dan totaal niet meer ziet zitten:
If Romney is the Republican nominee, he would be wise to resist all the advice hell get on how to forge the kind of connection with voters that has heretofore escaped him. He should play by different rules: Dont go out of your way to empathize. Dont tell anyone about your passions. Dont share endearing personal stories.
Romney neednt dazzle with his personality or move people with his struggles. The standard he has to meet is the one Barack Obama famously established for Hillary Clinton back in their 2008 campaign likable enough. People have to like Romney the way they like their accountant. They have to consider him trustworthy and capable, full stop.
Dat is het precies. Romney moet kiezers overtuigen dat hij competent is en dat hij Obamas rotzooi kan opruimen. Of kiezers dan wel of niet een biertje met hem willen drinken is totaal irrelevant. Het gaat erom dat het land op deugdelijke wijze bestuurd wordt. Punt.
