Moslimbroeders gaan waarschijnlijk winnen in Egypte

Volgens de Jerusalem Post is de kans bijzonder groot dat de Moslimbroeders de verkiezingen van vandaag in Egypte gaan winnen.
There, all signs point to the Muslim Brotherhood the godfather of all Islamist movements and Egypts best-organized institution as poised to emerge easily as the biggest winner from Mondays parliamentary vote.
Egypt remains a largely poor, underdeveloped country where three in 10 people are illiterate and four in 10 live on less than $2 a day.
The Brotherhoods message, its readily accessible lexicon of piety and justice, resonates with ordinary Egyptians unfamiliar with the intricacies of the democratic process and plethora of parties that have sprung up in the post-Hosni Mubarak era.
Daar komt nog eens bij dat de Egyptische maatschappij bijzonder conservatief is. In een peiling eerder dit jaar liet 60% van de kiezers bijvoorbeeld nog weten dat de wetten van het land geheel en al gebasseerd moesten zijn op de Koran. 84% zei zelfs dat moslims 'afvalligen' ter dood gebracht moeten worden, en 82% vond dat vreemdgaan bestraft moet worden met steniging.
Kortom: secularisme is dus niet bepaald populair in het land van Nijl. En ja, dat kon weleens heel problematisch worden.
