Redelijk beschaafde klimaatdiscussie in Canada
Dit keer zonder geschreeuw en verwensingen. Maar toch ...
Het is internationaal gezien nog steeds moeilijk om publieke discussies te organiseren tussen voor en tegenstanders van de menselijke broeikashypothese (AGW = 'Anthropogenic Global Warming'). Als deze al tot stand komen, komt het nogal eens voor dat de sprekers zich al gauw laten meeslepen door emoties.
In de opvatting van vele AGWers zijn de klimaatsceptici erop uit om verwarring te zaaien in een debat, dat volgens hen al lang geleden is beslist, omdat 97% van de wetenschappers zich zouden hebben uitgesproken ten gunste van de AGWhypothese. Er zou dus een consensus zijn. Ik heb al vele malen aangetoond dat deze 97% een sprookje en propaganda is, maar deze misvatting blijft moeilijk te bestrijden omdat de AGWpropagandisten, media en zelfs bewindslieden deze stelling steeds maar weer herhalen. Maar onder gekwalificeerde wetenschappers is de scepsis wijdverbreid, zoals verschillende onderzoeken hebben aangetoond. Uit sommige onderzoeken blijkt dat zij zelfs een ruime meerderheid vormen.
Ook worden van AGWzijde vaak autoriteitsargumenten aangevoerd. Bijvoorbeeld dat bijna alle wetenschappelijke academies ter wereld AGW zouden hebben onderschreven. Over de wijze waarop zij tot die positiebepaling zijn gekomen (enquêtes onder alle leden of onder alleen klimatologisch gekwalificeerde leden? En op welke gronden?) ontbreekt elke informatie nog los van het feit dat dit soort methoden geen enkel wetenschappelijk bewijs vormen. Wetenschappelijke waarheidsvinding vindt nu eenmaal niet bij handopsteken plaats. Voorts wordt beweerd dat wat klimaatsceptici doen vergelijkbaar is met de tactiek van de tabakslobby in een grijs verleden. Ook zouden klimaatsceptici geld krijgen en in dienst staan van de fossiele brandstoffenindustrie. Dit zijn allemaal belachelijke argumenten, die niets met het wezen van het meningsverschil tussen protagonisten en antagonisten van AGW hebben te maken.
Gelukkig zijn er wetenschappers aan beide kanten van het spectrum, die zich niets aantrekken van dit soort onzin, die vooral door radicale stromingen binnen de milieubeweging wordt verspreid. Zij hebben op Climate Dialogue een forum gevonden, waar zij op serieuze wijze hun inhoudelijke argumenten kunnen uitwisselen. Het beheer van deze website is in handen van een aantal Nederlandse pro and antiAGWers, die op collegiale en ontspannen wijze samenwerken. De website, die wordt gefinancierd door de Nederlandse overheid, is uniek in de wereld.
Maar op Climate Dialogue vinden discussies plaats tussen professionals, die moeilijk toegankelijk zijn voor geïnteresseerde leken. Daarnaast is ook een bredere publieke discussie gewenst ook voor beleidsmakers die beslissingen moeten nemen over miljardenuitgaven voor het klimaatbeleid en die gewoonlijk geen flauw benul hebben van de consequenties van hun beslissingen. Dit soort discussies worden in de regel door AGWers uit alle macht getraineerd. Waarom?
Ik denk dat het antwoord op die vraag is dat zij zich monopolisten wanen en wensen te blijven wat betreft de klimaatwetenschap. Ondanks het feit dat vele klimaatsceptici over betere algemene wetenschappelijke 'credentials' beschikken, wensen zij hen niet op hun terrein toe te laten. En de overheid steunt hen daar in het algemeen in. Dat betekent in feite dat de 'second opinion' van de klimaatsceptici doelbewust en actief wordt onderdrukt. Een ander antwoord op die vraag is dat wanneer publieke klimaatdiscussies voor een onbevooroordeeld publiek plaatsvinden, de AGWers ervaren dat het publiek meestal de kant van de sceptici kiest. Ik heb daar persoonlijke ervaring mee. Resultaat? Zij weigeren verdere discussie.
In de VS en Canada ligt de zaak waarschijnlijk nog gevoeliger dan bij ons. Daarom is het des te opmerkelijker dat het nu ook in Canada mogelijk is gebleken om een dergelijke discussie te voeren.
Onder de titel, 'Real scientists decimate warmists in a public debate', plaatste ICECAP enige impressies van de discussie, geschreven door één van de klimaatsceptische sprekers aldaar, de astronoom Gordon Fulks, op zijn website.

The debate went very well, because we had real scientists on our side and the best the other side could muster were two professional propagandists and one weak correspondenceschool meteorologist. Since our opponents were heavily into the 97% nonsense, I asked where were their 97 PhD scientists to counter the three of us? The audience easily saw through the attempts of the other side to exaggerate their own credentials and support.
I made sure that those supporting Global Warming went first, because they were the proponents, and we were the opponents. That gave us a clear target, not the nebulous nonsense we usually face. And it was not difficult to anticipate what they would say, because none of our opponents were the least bit sophisticated. The first alarmist to speak was Kyle Dittmer, a hydrologist pretending to be a meteorologist. He sounded like the inept scientist he is, never doing more than vaguely addressing the supposed link between mans CO2 releases and climate change. Im sure that the audience recognized Dittmers weakness.
The succeeding presentations from the other alarmists got worse not better. Their former Greenpeace organizer, Ryan Rittenhouse, lectured the audience about confirmation bias, suggesting that it was something we were guilty of and he was not. That was ludicrous on the face of it because of his total lack of any scientific credentials. But he was completely convinced of his righteousness because 97% of scientists and peerreviewed papers agreed with him! Furthermore, Michael Manns Hockey Stick had to be correct, because the UN IPCC keeps using it!
Then came the witch Daphne Wysham. Her very first words were a personal attack on Professor Mörner that she must have retrieved off the Internet. Then she continued with attacks on Fred Singer, Joe Bast, and the Heartland Institute over Naomi Oreskes tobacco allegations and Koch brothers financing. Her only discussion of the actual topic were references to an unequivocal consensus, quotes from Skeptical Science, and a harangue about coal-fired power plant carbon pollution!
Our presentations were far different, because they were filled with the logic and evidence of science. Don Easterbrook spoke first for us and second overall. His very effective technique is to present a great deal of the data that show what is really going on. People instantly realize that they are listening to a professor who surely knows his field very well. Mörner sounded a little more eccentric, with his Swedish accent, sense of humor, and concentration on a single topic: seal level. But he was hugely credible too. I batted cleanup and was ready for the sort of nonsense and hatred that Wysham spewed. In fact, all I had to do was to take apart some of her specifics in the three minute rebuttal at the beginning of my remarks and then launch into my prepared text. I went back to prepared remarks to make sure that I did not forget something important in the fifteen minutes we were allotted.
Were we successful? I think that we were very successful. One of the best indications was a compliment from the head librarian who thought that we had been very educational. Since that is my entire strategy, it must have worked. But let me be sure to give credit where due. Our opponents were so bad as to help us enormously.
Although we did not have time for questions during the program, I stayed until we had to vacate the room to answer the many good questions that people had. They wanted to discuss the science. The other side slunk away, except for Rittenhouse who was so annoyed that he is still throwing insults our way days later.
