Klimaatnazi's
Het houdt niet op! Niet vanzelf!
De vooraanstaande Amerikaanse klimaatscepticus Roy Spencer heeft er genoeg van om voortdurend voor klimaatontkenner (een beladen woord vanwege de connotatie Holocaustontkenner) te worden uitgemaakt. Er ging bij hem een knop om en hij besloot de mensen die dat doen een koekje van eigen deeg te geven en ze voortaan klimaatnazi's ('global warming Nazi's) te noemen.
Op zijn blog schreef hij daar onder meer over:

When politicians and scientists started calling people like me deniers, they crossed the line. They are still doing it.
They indirectly equate (1) the skeptics view that global warming is not necessarily all manmade nor a serious problem, with (2) the denial that the Nazis extermination of millions of Jews ever happened. Too many of us for too long have ignored the repulsive, extremist nature of the comparison. Its time to push back. Im now going to start calling these people global warming Nazis.
The pseudo-scientific ramblings by their leaders have falsely warned of mass starvation, ecological collapse, agricultural collapse, overpopulation all so that the masses would support their radical policies. Policies that would not voluntarily be supported by a majority of freedom-loving people.
They are just as guilty as the person who cries fire! in a crowded theater when no fire exists. Except they threaten the lives of millions of people in the process.
Like the Nazis, they advocate the supreme authority of the state (fascism), which in turn supports their scientific research to support their cause (in the 1930s, it was superiority of the white race).
Dissenting scientific views are now jack-booted through tactics like pressuring scientific journals to not publish papers with which they disagree even getting journal editors to resign.
Like the Nazis, they are anti-capitalist. They are willing to sacrifice millions of lives of poor people at the altar of radical environmentalism, advocating expensive energy policies that increase poverty. And if there is a historically demonstrable threat to humanity, it is poverty. ...
So, as long as they continue to call people like me deniers, I will call them global warming Nazis.

Als klimaatscepticus heeft Roy Spencer jarenlang blootgestaan aan persoonlijke aanvallen, zowel boven als onder de gordel. Het is dus begrijpelijk dat hij vindt dat de maat nu vol is. Maar toch vind ik zijn reactie overtrokken, onjuist en onverstandig.
Natuurlijk 'klimaatontkenner' is een nare kwalificatie, vooral voor degenen die de Holocaust nog op het netvlies hebben staan. Maar ik heb toch reden te veronderstellen dat vele aanhangers van de menselijke broeikashypothese die deze kwalificatie gebruiken, zich niet bewust zijn van die associatie, dus daarmee geen kwaad in de zin hebben. Toch zou ik hen willen aanraden deze term niet te gebruiken, ook al hebben sommige klimaatsceptici, zoals Richard Lindzen en Steve Milloy, daartegen geen bezwaar.
Bovendien hoeven klimaatsceptici zich toch niet te verlagen tot het niveau van sommige van hun meest extreme opponenten of onbenullen, die de klok hebben horen luiden, maar niet weten waar de klepel hangt?
'Klimaatontkenner' is ook een wonderlijke en onlogische kwalificatie. Want niemand ontkent het klimaat. Er is ook niemand die klimaatverandering ontkent. Klimaatverandering is van alle tijden. Het is de norm. Bovendien ontkent niemand de opwarming. Daarnaast ontkent (bijna) niemand dat CO2 een broeikasgas is en enige opwarmende invloed kan hebben. Het gaat uitsluitend om de vraag hoe groot die invloed is en of die tot een catastrofale opwarming zal leiden.
In Nederland wordt de term 'klimaatontkenner' voor zover mij bekend overigens weinig gebruikt. Hier is de term 'klimaatscepticus' (soms ook 'klimaatcriticus') in zwang. Die term heeft m.i. geen pejoratieve bijklank. En daar is iedereen gelukkig mee.
Maar om hoeveel klimaatsceptici gaat het nu eigenlijk? En vormen ze echt maar een verwaarloosbaar percentage van de wetenschappers die gekwalificeerd zijn om daarover een oordeel te vellen?
Reeds eerder heb ik uitvoerig aangetoond dat de veeelgehoorde bewering dat 97% van alle wetenschappers pro-AGW zouden zijn (AGW = 'Anthropogenic Global Warming') tot de misleidende klimaatpropaganda moet worden gerekend. Ik schreef daarover:
De 97% slaat op het aandeel van de wetenschappers die voorstander zijn van de menselijke broeikashypothese. Dit percentage is berekend op basis van een nietrepresentatieve steekproef van 79 (!) wetenschappers. Dat is dus lachwekkend weinig, zeker als men dit getal afzet tegen de meer dan 30.000 ondertekenaars van de Oregon Petitie.
Bovendien rammelde het onderzoek vanuit methodologisch perspectief. Zie hier.
Een nieuwe, zeer recente peiling in het Verenigd Koninkrijk onder 5000 gekwalificeerde respondenten leverde 98 % (!) op maar dan voor de (milde) klimaatsceptici!

Many readers will remember Mike Haseler's survey of sceptic opinion. The initial results are now available and a press release has been issued.
The Scottish Climate & Energy Forum has been conducting a survey on the background and attitudes of participants to online climate discussions. Thanks to the generosity of all who participated, the survey has had a massive response which will take time and resource to process. However initial analysis already shows that the actual views and backgrounds of participants are in sharp contrast with some high-profile statements being made about the participants. Therefore I felt we should make these initial results known as soon as practical to avoid further damage, both to the reputation of those involved in the online debate, as well as those making the unfounded and presumably mistaken accusations of denial.
As such, I am releasing the following statement regarding the survey.
A sceptical consensus: the science is right but catastrophic global warming is not going to happen
A recent survey of those participating in on-line forums showed that most of the 5,000 respondents were experienced engineers, scientists and IT professionals most degree qualified and around a third with post graduate qualifications. The survey, carried out by the Scottish Climate and Energy Forum, asked respondents for their views on CO2 and the effect it might have on global temperatures. The results were surprising. 96% of respondents said that atmospheric CO2 levels are increasing with 79% attributing the increase to man-made sources. 81% agreed that global temperatures had increased over the 20th century and 81% also agreed that CO2 is a warming gas. But only 2% believed that increases in CO2 would cause catastrophic global warming.

Ik kan niet beoordelen hoe representatief deze peiling/steekproef is. Het is denkbaar dat door de toegepast methode bevraging van respondenten die actief zijn op klimaatblogs de uitkomst in het voordeel van de (milde) klimaatsceptici is uitgevallen.
Maar toch! 98% onder 5000 respondenten liegt er niet om. Dus al weer een sprookje minder!
Bij dit alles moeten we echter niet vergeten dat in de wetenschap niet bij handopsteken wordt beslist. Slechts bewijs telt.
