Fail: Paul Krugman citeert Naomi Klein instemmend
Naomi Klein schreef The Shock Doctrine, een socialistisch broddelwerkje dat van aantoonbare onwaarheden en complottheorieën aan elkaar hangt.
Dat heeft Krugman, een Keynesiaanse econoom, er evenwel niet van weerhouden om Klein instemmend te citeren in zijn recentste column in The New York Times.
Klein verdedigt in haar boek de complottheorie dat vrije markt-georiënteerde politici rampen aangrijpen om, terwijl de bevolking nog in shock is van de ramp, privatiseringen door te voeren. Haar these is al uitgebreid weerlegd, ook vanuit linkse hoek.
Desondanks haalt Krugman Kleins theorie instemmend aan en relateert hij het aan een recent voorstel om de macht van vakbonden te beperken:
The story of the privatization-obsessed Coalition Provisional Authority was the centerpiece of Naomi Kleins best-selling book The Shock Doctrine, which argued that it was part of a broader pattern. From Chile in the 1970s onward, she suggested, right-wing ideologues have exploited crises to push through an agenda that has nothing to do with resolving those crises, and everything to do with imposing their vision of a harsher, more unequal, less democratic society.
Which brings us to Wisconsin 2011, where the shock doctrine is on full display.

Whats happening in Wisconsin is, instead, a power grab -- an attempt to exploit the fiscal crisis to destroy the last major counterweight to the political power of corporations and the wealthy.
Tyler Cowen schreef, in een recensie van Kleins boek: "If nothing else, Ms. Klein's book provides an interesting litmus test as to who is willing to condemn its shoddy reasoning"
Na Stiglitz, eveneens een linkse econoom, zakt nu ook Krugman voor deze test.
